Craig-y-Nos Castle has commissioned the recording of a number of local walks which can be downloaded or printed out directly from the Internet. Although we try to ensure that they continue to provide reliable information and utilise only public and permitted paths and rights of way we cannot be held responsible for any consequences resulting from their use.

In addition Brecon Beacons National Park have a program of conducted walks in the area and details of these are listed, following the introduction below....

Guided walks are a brilliant way to discover more about a place. Your Leader will be able to tell you about wildlife, history and landscape, and you can ask them questions as you go. You can meet new people and enjoy a chat as you walk. Our guided walks take you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain, from high mountain peaks and rugged moor land to river banks and hidden valleys. Whether you are a seasoned hill walker or have never been on a guided walk before you will find a walk in this programme to suit you.

Walks are divided into five levels so you can pick one that is suitable for you.

1 Access for all: Level, usually surfaced, paths with no stiles or obstacles, suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

2 Easy: Taking it easy pace, suitable for novice walkers.

3 Moderate: A steady pace but some ascent involved.

4 Energetic: Some steep ascents, good for improving fitness.

5 Strenuous: Longer walks with steep ascents requiring good level of fitness.

The Brecon Beacons Park Society

The Park Society offers guided walks of a more challenging nature every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday (no Friday walks between October and February). There is a £2.00 fee for non-members.

More details about the Park Society and its walk program are available from Nigel Phillips, telephone: 01639 730179, e-mail: nigel.phillips@blueorg.com, or visit www.breconbeaconsparksociety.org

Appropriate clothing and footwear

For all walks: It can be cold and windy on the hills throughout the year so it is sensible to bring a waterproof, even if the weather seems fine. In warmer weather sun-cream and a hat with a brim are needed, even on an overcast

day. Bring a bottle of water or a flask, especially on longer walks and warm days.

Access for all and easy walks:

Wear comfortable clothes that enable you to move freely. Flat shoes or boots with grip on the soles should be worn, remember that the ground may be wet or muddy. Moderate, Energetic and Strenuous: Strong shoes or boots with good grip are needed, with boots specifically designed for walking being recommended. On the harder walks you will need proper hiking boots with good support as the ground may be rough and steep.

Our Leaders

Some of our leaders are National Park Authority Staff, many are volunteers who give up their time to help share their knowledge and love of the area. The Brecon Beacons National Park Authority is registered with AALA (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) and our walks follow strict safety guidance. Before a walk you will be asked to fill in a sheet with details of someone to contact in case of emergency. Our leaders are all experienced and have been fully trained in safety and first aid.

What Happens on a Guided Walk?

Unless you have to book in advance just turn up at the meeting place a little before the start time, the Leader should already be there. Once everybody has arrived the Leader will tell you about the walk, and check that everyone has the right clothing and footwear. During the walk everybody will stay together, at a suitable pace, no one will be left behind.

As you walk the Leader will tell you about points of interest along the route and about the National Park. At the end the Leader will hand out a form which asks what you thought of the walk, you can fill it in and hand it to the Leader, or take it away and post it back.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome at many of the walks and events listed here. Where dogs are not allowed it is clearly shown. If you bring your dog it must be kept under close control at all times and only be allowed off the lead with the Leader’s permission. You have checked your fitness against the walk categories, but is your dog fit for the walk? If it is only used to a trot around the park it may struggle with steep hills or stiles! Never leave your dog in the car while you attend a walk or event – dogs can over-heat even on cooler days.

Please Note:

• The Leader has the right to refuse to take you on a walk if they feel you do not have the right clothing, footwear or equipment, or level of fitness required for the walk or for any other safety reason. They can refuse to accept dogs on the walk if they are not under close control.

• It is your responsibility to tell the Leader of anything that you know could affect your health and wellbeing during the walk. If you have any medical conditions that may affect you, or that would be important to know about if you had an accident, please tell the Leader. They will need to know about any medication you may need, for example an inhaler, so make sure you have it with you.

• Although walks should finish at the stated time they may finish earlier or later in some cases, e.g. due to adverse weather. Please ensure that you will not be left ‘stranded’ at the finish point if this happens.

• Walks will usually go ahead except in the most adverse of weather conditions, if the walk is cancelled someone will be at the start point to let you know.

• Some of the car parks where walks start are un-supervised so lock you car and take any valuables with you. The National Park Authority cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss.

Don't miss the magnificent Birds of Prey of the Brecon Beacons when you stay at Craig-y-Nos Castle.

Throughout the year we occasionally have a Sunday Carvery available to residents and non-residents.
