Bob Grainger Photography Course

Please find below details about the latest DSLR photography course that I’m putting on at my studio at Craig-y-Nos Country Park. Please phone or email me if you would like to book a place (a £20 deposit is required). Tel: 07850 656765.

Four-week beginners DSLR Photography Course. Getting out of Automatic: Using a DSLR Camera in Manual Exposure Mode, to be held at The Photography Studio, Craig-y-Nos Country Park, Brecon Road, Pen-y-Cae, Swansea Valley SA9 1GL. Four Tuesdays, 6-9pm, 14, 21 and 28 February, plus 7 March, 2017. Cost just £40 for the four-week course (total of 12 hours).

The photography studio is in the grounds of the beautiful Craig-y-Nos Country Park, Pen-y-Cae, on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The park covers some forty-acres, has two very large ponds complete with ducks, geese, two rivers, meadows, boat house, picnic benches, tea rooms, craft shop, stained-glass shop, toilets and ample parking (free parking for my visitors!). The studio, which is wheelchair accessible (and has nearby disabled toilet and free disabled parking), is the single-storey, red-brick building at the bottom of the car park by the boat house and pond. The photography tuition will take place both inside the studio and out in the grounds (weather/light permitting), and will have a maximum of about six students. All printed course materials, tea and coffee will be provided and included in the price.

No previous knowledge of photography or camera operation required. The course is suitable for people who already own their own DSLR camera or are thinking about buying one (although I do have one or two DSLR cameras that people could use each evening). Please note that 'bridge' or 'point-and-shoot' cameras will not be suitable. Students will be taught, from scratch, how to use a DSLR in Manual Exposure mode, which allows for much more control and for greater creatively, than simply using the camera in an automatic mode.

I am a professional photographer, covering around forty weddings a year, in addition to providing photography services for family photoshoots and portraiture, pets, charities, live events and small businesses in the south Wales area. I live in Cwmtwrch, in the Swansea Valley, and I run the photography studio at Craig-y-Nos Country Park .

GENERAL COURSE OUTLINE:

Session One - Tuesday, 14 February, 2017, 6-9pm
Finding your way around the camera's controls and settings:
Controlling Exposure (how bright or dark the photograph is), by manually adjusting the camera's Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO settings.

Session Two - Tuesday, 21 February, 2017, 6-9pm
Exposure continued:
Creative Exposure - Freezing Motion: Avoiding blurry images and capturing fast-moving subjects, by working with the camera's shutter speed.

Session Three - Tuesday, 28 February, 2017, 6-9pm
Creative Exposure continued - Achieving soft, fuzzy backgrounds for portraiture, and 'everything in focus' for landscapes, by manipulating Depth Of Field.

Session Four - Tuesday, 7 March, 2017, 6-9pm
Composition: the 'Rule Of Thirds', framing, foreground/mid-ground/background interest, lead-in lines, perspective, the S-Curve, etc.

Creative Lighting: Basic principals of light - the Inverse Square Law and light 'fall off', "Big light Good; Small light Bad!", plus using small camera-mounted flash lights.
